Hailing from Ocean Grove, Sam McIntosh is a Para Athlete chasing the tails of the world’s best wheelchair sprinters towards the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games. In 2007 at the age of 17 a BMX accident left Sam a Quadriplegic. Sam made it his goal to return to school the following year and finish his VCE, graduating with his friends. In 2009 he was pounced upon by local athletes who persuaded him to try wheelchair track racing. Sam quickly picked up the sport and started competing in local events, building his way up to the State Championships, National Championships and his first Australian team in the World Para Athletics Championships in Christchurch, 2011.

In the lead up to the 2012 London Paralympics Sam suffered a major set back, breaking yet another vertebrae in his neck after falling while dancing on New Year’s Eve. Having to spend 3 months out of the racing chair in rehabilitation, Sam made it his sole mission to make it to the Paralympic Games 9 months later. After a lot of hard work, both in and out of the chair, Sam achieved this goal, making his first Australian Paralympic team. Since then Sam has represented Australia in multiple World Championships and the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games where he finished 4th in the 100m.

It is now Sam’s goal to make it to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Sam receives no funding support for travel and relies solely on local sponsorships and donations to continue his goal of Tokyo next year.
